Some types of stress problems that are difficult to analyze with Finite Element Method (FEM), but can be measured during stress analysis with strain gages:

  • Complex working forces on a structure can be difficult to define and model correctly, especially when the applied loads are constantly changing.
  • Stresses caused by mechanical assembly of component parts, such as bolts, latches, springs, and welds.
  • Residual stress that resides in the part which results from manufacturing processes such as welding, casting, and treatments such as shot peening.
  • Stresses resulting from imperfections, fabrication tolerances and fitment of parts in the actual structure.
  • Elastic-Plastic stress behavior. FEA can’t infallibly predict the occurrence of localized yielding since it is random and its exact location unpredictable.
