Measured Strain/Calculated Stress
The use of strain gages to measure the strain and calculate the induced stress has long been recognized as a way to predict the long-term performance of a product under stress.
The commonly used Von Mises failure criterion can easily be calculated using either a 2-element 90° tee rosette (assuming max/min strain directions are known) or a 3-element rectangular rosette, in conjunction with StrainSmart data systems from Micro-Measurements.
StrainSmart allows complete confidence in the measured strains and the calculated stress via shunt calibration (scaling to take leadwire desensitization into account) and well-documented formulae (Mohr’s circle and Hooke’s law).
