Always “Finish” First

Prior to strain gage bonding, preparing the surface of the test article is paramount, and proper cleanliness and surface finish are critical. Surface irregularities in a test article disturb the plane of the strain gage sensing element. This will result in poor stability and reduced strain gage fatigue life. For help in proper surface preparation, refer to Micro-Measurements Instruction Bulletin B-129-8.

Jim gave a wonderful onsite presentation and demonstration for our engineering students. His passion and enthusiasm for his work were evident. The students won't forget his potty training tip--always wipe in one direction when surface prepping!
