Bob Watson remembrance speech for Dr. Zandman
Several of us here today had the pleasure of working closely with Dr. Zandman. Here is one account about remembering him – which is a personal story illustrating just how small the world is that we live in
Dr. Zandman arrived in America in the 1950’s, bringing with him a new measurement technique called Photostress.
After attending his first American technical society meeting in 1956 and presenting his new measurement technique, he realized that he needed a respected member of that technical community to champion Photostress.
He befriended Dr. Daniel Post, who not only worked on promoting the technical validity of Photostress, but, working from his basement home laboratory in Averill Park, NY, developed the SP&D and etching processes that helped launch Vishay Intertechnology.
Fast forward some 20 years. I am in school at Virginia Tech, looking for a champion for my undergraduate research project and befriended Dr. Daniel Post. That project was for Micro-Measurements, ultimately leading to my employment here. Dr. Post not only led my project research, but continued as my friend and mentor for over 4 decades.
Fast forward another 30-some years. It’s 2009 and I’m riding in a limousine from the Philadelphia airport to Vishay’s headquarters in Malvern, PA; travelling to discuss a new idea for a patent with Dr. Zandman. After spending much of the day with him, which included lunch at his favorite restaurant where he especially enjoyed the turtle soup, I’m back in the limousine heading to the Philadelphia airport, when I realize that I have come full circle – not only for that particular day, but for an entire career; from those early days when Dr. Post would tell me amazing stories about Dr. Zandman, to having spent most of my career working with this amazing man.
Dr. Felix Zandman has gifted every member of the VPG family with a company and a professional culture of which we can be proud.
It is befitting his tireless efforts throughout his life to ensure that his legacy continues.
Thank you for your attention
This concludes the 2019 service honoring Dr. Zandman.
