May 10, 2017 - 8:27am - When ice skaters leave the ice for jumps and landings, they experience very high stresses along the blade. The forces upon landing can be as great as eight times their actual weight. Doing this over and over can lead to stress fractures in the foot, back of hip areas. With Micro-Measurements optical stress measuring technique, PhotoStress, the ice skate blade designs can be optimized to reduce stresses on the body.Photostress Analysis of an Ice Skate Blade
May 10, 2017 - 8:28am - Resolving the reasons for a part failure can sometimes be challenging, especially when a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) appears to show that the stresses should not cause failure. Sometimes real loading conditions can be different than the anticipated loads used in developing the FEA model, and this situation is instantly revealed by Micro-Measurements Photostress. In this photo, a Photostress analysis of a real part under real loads revealed that a mounting hole was placed in a highly stressed location, thus weakening the part. The solution to the problem was just as easily revealed by noting several low stress locations where the hole could be located without weakening the part.FEA Validation by PhotoStress
May 10, 2017 - 8:28am - This photo illustrates what can be achieved by a skilled strain gage installer. Here, a Micro-Measurements EA-06-008CL-120 strain gage has been trimmed to fit and bonded to a small diameter wire. A load and unloaded check of zero-return on your instrumentation will tell you if the installation is good and functioning correctly. Strain Measurement on a Small Wire
May 10, 2017 - 8:28am - Since the 1980s, automobiles have been using plastic fuel tanks in place of steel tanks. Over time, a gas tank may become brittle and fail. When this happens, gas cam leak from the automobile causing a negative effect on fuel efficiency and potentially a fire hazard. With PhotoStress, such failures can be prevented and corrected during the design phase.

January 1, 2000 - 12:02am - This photo is the hallmark of a properly installed Micro-Measurements EA-Series strain gage. Note the 3-wire, ¼-bridge connection of the instrument cable to the bondeable terminal. Solder connections are kept as small as possible to improve fatigue life and elongation capability of the strain gage. The thin, enameled, solid copper wire is routed from the strain gage perpendicular to the maximum strain, and the wire is looped to decouple strain transfer to the wire.Properly Installed Strain Gage Using a Bondeable Terminal

Also note that the rough, cast surface was sanded smooth in the vicinity of the strain gage location; this is correct surface preparation procedure for installation on rough surfaces.EA-13-031EC-120 Strain Gage on Casting
January 1, 2000 - 12:25am - This photo shows Micro-Measurements’ EA-Series strain gages installed in areas of stress concentrations on a piston. An analysis, such as shown, allows designers to optimize the piston for both strength and mass. A wide variety of measurement situations required the use of different types of strain gage patterns. Strip gages are used in areas where a measurement of strain gradient is needed. To compare with a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) model, strain gage rosettes are utilized so that both the direction and magnitude of the maximum and minimum principle strains can be measured under all load conditions. Shear gages are also utilized. These strain gages are bonded using M-Bond 600 adhesive. 134-AWN wire is used so that the wire can be sealed to the surface of the piston and connecting rod, and is able to withstand the high G-forces encountered during a test run of the engine. Though not shown, a protective coating, such as M-Coat GA-61 can be applied in a thin layer and will protect the gage installation from the hot oil environment.Extensive Stress Analysis of a Piston

October 30, 2017 - 8:48pm - This photo shows a beautifully installed Micro-Measurements WK- series dual-linear strain gage. However, can you see what is wrong? This gage is wired as a half-bridge with each of the two grids in adjacent Wheatstone bridge arms. Since the grids are both in the same direction, they will experience equal strain and equal change in resistance. Equal changes in resistance in adjacent bridge arms means that the bridge stays balanced and the voltage output will remain unchanged. These two grids would be better monitored as two ¼-bridge circuits.

March 14, 2017 - 4:21pm - A key benefit in the specification of pre-cabled gages for stress analysis is their efficiency during installation. With this new option, Micro-Measurements has extended this benefit into higher application temperatures. New Option SP35 includes ten feet (three meters) of 30-AWG, twisted, etched Teflon leadwires (330-FTE). The etching ensures that any protective coatings applied over the installation will bond and seal to the cable. Gage leadwires are pre-attached via solder to the CEA- and WK-series strain gages, allowing them to support specific requirements to +350°F (+177°C) and +400°F (+204°C), respectively. Their three-wire quarter bridge configuration cancels any potential cable thermal output which may occur in response to temperature changes.
Option SP35 is ideal for the support of higher temperature stress analyses of automotive and aerospace components, or of any other structural material. It is particularly useful for higher temperature composite materials testing, eliminating the need for soldering on the test article, and thus the possibility of heat damage to sensitive surfaces. In addition, Option SP35 has no impact on strain gage resistance tolerance or strain range specifications, allowing for continued seamless integration into the application environment. At the same time, it offers a viable leadwire solution with simplified installation requirements. With these combined features, Option SP35 now allows a customer to specify both Micro-Measurements CEA- and WK-series strain gages into an expanded number of higher temperature applications, particularly those where the limitations of traditional pre-gaged vinyl insulated cabling had previously limited their use. For more information on Option SP35, or other available stress and strain sensing technologies from Micro-Measurements, visit www.micro-measurements.com.

February 8, 2018 - 10:36am - The demand for reliable, durable and compact electronic devices is all around us. Consumer electronics, industrial, automotive, aerospace and medical device manufactures want it, “lighter, more compact, more durable, more powerful” and, oh by the way, all at a lower price. This demands that the product is designed, tested and manufactured to exacting standards to meet the expectations of an ever more demanding marketplace. These requirements have been further complicated by the elimination of leaded solder to be RoHS compliant. Lead-free solder is much more brittle and is susceptible to brittle fracture when exposed to excessive strain.
The solution is WK strain gage (gauge) sensors designed to meet the growing demand for precise, stable, and reliable stress analysis of PCBs, even in harsh environments.

February 8, 2018 - 10:46am - Cracks in the PCBs — brittle fractures in solder and even across components, particularly around BGAs — can be induced by in-circuit test fixtures and during assembly, burn-in and testing, system integration, and packaging and shipping. Strain measurements should be made after all design iterations of the PCB, including changes to on-board components, which may alter thermal stress loading. This is especially useful when introducing new solder materials and processes, which may have a different stiffness and introduce a different soldering thermal profile. The miniaturization of consumer electronics — and consequent increase in component density — results in larger thermal stresses, new requirements for surviving repeated loadings, and a greater need for impact stress survival. Meeting these specifications requires accurate knowledge of strains in the PCB and on-board components. Strain gage measurement is the quickest, most accurate, and most cost-effective method for identifying strains on a PCB, and can be used in developing loading fixtures and test plans to optimize the testing phase.应变片型号 Strain Gage: WK-06-030WR-120

August 22, 2018 - 1:41pm - The Micro-Measurements S5198 pattern provides precise strain detection with minimized non-uniform PCA strain gradient effects, along with reliable operation to +200°C. An industry best-in-class resistance specification of 350 Ω, as compared to the 120 Ω typical industry standard, reduces the unwanted self-heating and heat dissipation effects commonly found among substrates with poor heat conductivity, such as PCB’s. A reduced overall footprint, with grid length of just 0.36 millimeters, facilitates ease of target board placement and integration. The S5198 pattern is further supported by pre-attached high-performance Teflon® insulated flexible thin cables, consisting of three twisted wires per grid. The wires are color coded, stripped and tinned for ease of PCB wire routing and connection to data acquisition systems. In addition to PCB testing, the pattern is suitable for ball grid array (BGA) component testing, spherical bend testing, mechanical shock testing, PCB flexures, and in-circuit testing (ICT). The S5198 is RoHS compliant and is utilized in accordance with IPC–JEDEC 9702, IPC–JEDEC 9704, and JEDEC JESD22-B111 standards.
